Writers' Template - Scripted Mission Dialogue

On a project I worked on, the main Excel workbook used to interface with the game project editor was found to be too complicated and overwhelming for the writers on our team to use efficiently. Working with the Technical Narrative Designer, who developed the main Excel workbook, I created the Writers' templates. The writers used these to write the dialogue (in this instance it was the Scripted Mission dialogue), which would then have the lines imported into the main Excel workbook.

The Scripted Mission Dialogue Writers' Template allowed the writers to:

  • Edit the lines of dialogue.

  • Add VO direction notes (if needed).

  • See the word count of each line as they edit.

  • Mark each line for if it needs/is currently being edited, if the line needs to be reviewed, or if the line is done/approved.

  • Mark each line as to whether it has been recorded or not.

  • Mark each line as to whether the recordings have been imported into Wwise (the audio application we were using with the editor).

  • Filter the sheet to specific characters (aka. "Actors") to work on.

  • Mark the sheet if it is ready to be imported into the main Excel workbook.

Due to NDA I've had to use generic characters and simple lines to demonstrate the technical aspects of the Writers' Template for Scripted Mission Dialogue.

Writers' Template - Systemic Dialogue

On the same project as the above Scripted Mission Dialogue, I also created a writers' template for Systemic Dialogue to be imported into the main Excel workbook. Along with the features mentioned in the Scripted Mission Dialogue Writers' Template, I also added a "Stats" sheet that automatically updated and calculated the word and line counts for each systemic dialogue tab (only showing Combat and Emotes in this case) as well as the total line and word count of all the sheets added together. The line and word counts only calculate when the lines are either marked for review or as done/approved.

Due to NDA I've had to use generic characters, simple lines and reduce the systemic dialogue to two examples (Combat and Emotes) to demonstrate the technical aspects of the Writers' Template for Systemic Dialogue.
